A Matter of Styling
I've always believed jewelry is about more than simply accessorizing an outfit. It's one of the easiest ways to express personality, tell a story, or add a little confidence to your day.
The same blouse, dress, or pair of jeans can feel completely different depending on what you choose to wear with it. A favorite necklace, a pair of statement earrings, or even a simple bracelet can transform an outfit from ordinary to uniquely your own.
In this collection of articles, I'll share styling ideas, inspiration, and a few thoughts on how jewelry can help reflect who you are. There are no hard rules here—just encouragement to experiment, have fun, and wear the pieces that make you smile when you catch your reflection in the mirror.🐝
Most of us start with the clothing.
The blouse.
The dress.
The shoes.
Jewelry is often the last thing added, almost as an afterthought. What if we dressed ourselves based on our favorite piece of jewelry? 🐝
I've found that jewelry is often the element that brings personality into an outfit. A simple blouse and skirt can feel casual, romantic, artistic, vintage-inspired, or polished depending on the accessories chosen.
For this style challenge, I paired a soft bohemian outfit with four very different jewelry options. Each creates a completely different feeling, even though the clothing remains the same.
The turquoise pendant adds a relaxed, creative feel. It brings color, movement, and a touch of wanderlust to the outfit.
The bracelet introduces organic textures and earthy elements. Perfect for someone who loves botanical details and a connection to the outdoors.
The antique-style setting and subtle sparkle create a romantic, timeless look that feels both feminine and effortless.
The larger pendant becomes the focal point of the outfit. It draws the eye and creates a bold artistic presence while still working beautifully with neutral clothing.
So now I'm curious...
Would you choose #1, #2, #3, or #4?

Statement Maker
I don't know about you, but when it comes to layering jewelry, I get a little intimidated.
Even as a maker who designs to coordinate together, I often wonder if I'm doing it right when I wear things myself.
Here's a simple pictorial that does a great job of showing how a few simple principles can create a beautifully layered look. 🐝
The Layers: Short, Medium, Long
Let's Break It Down!
#1 -14" Choker
This photo shows a beaded choker which has some substance to it. Note the turquise beads begin to establish a theme for the ensemble of necklaces.
#2 - 16" and 17" Chains
This photo shows two light chain necklaces with small pendants to bridge the gap between the next turquoise theme necklace.
#3 - 18" Pendant Necklace
Note this pendant necklace brings the theme of turquoise to the center of layers, and also creates interest with a different metal than that used in the chains above it. This mixed metal effect creates additional interest and styling.
#4 - 24" Statement Necklace
As this takes center stage because of its weight and colorway of turquoise, it brings the theme from the neck to the front of the body. forcing the eye to travel down the layering, creating a pleasing aesthetic, and a look that is truly "put together,"
#5 - Elements as Accents
The turquoise accents created a definitive theme that was present throughout the ensemble.
#6 - Mixed Metals
When used correctly, mixed metals can become quite complimentary to each other. But if you are not a fan of this eclectic styling technique, any single color metal will work fine. You can get an eclectic look by varying the weights and styles of chains.
#7 - Clothing
Clothing sets the backdrop for the entire show. Be sure the clothing you choose is suitable to the look you are trying to create with your jewelry. Layering works nicely for styles other than boho, too, such as pearls or chains in varying length for more elegant or business looks.
However you layer, just have fun with it! If the saying, "two is better than one" rings true for you, start there. And add more of what you like as you get more comfortable with layering. And remember, choosing a color or element theme may make it easier to do! 🐝
When I look in my closet, I notice a couple things - besides the section of clothes I've outgrown! I notice my wardrobe style has morphed from business casual to casual comfy,. And I notice that despite the style change, my pieces are still in my favorite color families. Which got me wondering... why am I drawn to certain colors over and over again?
In my closet you will still find black - It's been a staple that most of us have in our closet. But when it comes to color, you'll find color themes for each season in my closet. In spring and summer, it's coral and royal blue, and in fall and winter it's burgundy and brown.
When it comes to styling my wardrobe, I've never given much thought to what my color choices might say about me.
So that led me to think, "When I get dressed, what makes me choose what I wear for the day?" 🐝
Self-Reflection of My Color Choices
Coral
Coral is fun. It's cheerful, creative, and never takes itself too seriously. When I'm feeling happy and energetic, I often find myself reaching for coral florals, a gauzy coral jacket, or one of my favorite coral skirts.
Royal Blue
Royal blue has always been one of my favorite colors. When I choose blue, it's usually because I want to feel calm, confident, and a little more polished. It's expressive without being dramatic and makes me feel grounded.
Burgundy
Burgundy feels rich and expressive. Earlier in my career I wore a lot of red, but these days burgundy gives me that same sense of confidence and energy in a softer, more sophisticated way.
Brown
Brown has become my alternative to black. It still feels professional and put-together, but without the sharpness that black can sometimes project. When I choose brown, I think I'm choosing something earthy, approachable, and grounded.
Until I started thinking about this, I assumed I simply liked certain colors. But the more I reflected on it, the more I realized my choices often have less to do with fashion and more to do with how I want to feel.
Some days I'm drawn to calm.
Some days confidence.
Some days creativity.
The style of the outfit may be determined by where I'm going, but the color is often determined by how I want to show up.
Now I'm curious about you.
When you open your closet or jewelry box, what colors do you gravitate toward most often?
Are they simply colors you enjoy looking at?
Or do they reflect something deeper—how you see yourself, how you want to feel, or how you hope others will perceive you?
Perhaps our favorite colors tell a story about us long before we ever say a word. 🐝
One of the challenges of shopping for jewelry online is visualizing how a piece will actually look when you wear it. When we're shopping in person, we can try things on and instantly see how a necklace falls against our neckline, clothing, and body shape. Online, even when measurements are provided, it can be difficult to picture exactly where a necklace will sit.
To make things a little easier, I've put together this simple necklace length guide. It shows common necklace lengths and where they typically fall when worn. While every person is different, this chart can serve as a helpful starting point when choosing a piece online or planning how to layer necklaces from your own collection.
The next time you're shopping for jewelry, keep this guide handy. A few inches can make a surprising difference in how a necklace complements your outfit and personal style. 🐝
